Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
Split Mountain - Fish Creek
| This
place has the most remarkable echo I've ever heard; somehow, the uneven
surface of the mountainside produces very coherent reflection. If you stand
back some 100-150 yards from the rock, you will hear the echo off
your whisper! We've spent nearly an hour having fun with it.
At some moment, a group of vehicles emerged that did not look quite right. It consisted of a built Land Cruiser, two Scouts, two jeeps, and... late model Lexus LS300. I am not sure I would drive my own Lexus there (that is, if I ever own a Lexus, be it car or SUV, or any other car for that matter). The "bigga bruthas" bravely crossed the part of the arroyo strewn by 6" sized pebbles, while Lexus graciously slid by the sandy part. Past Split Mountain, the trail goes down to Mud Caves - it was a bit on a warm and lazy side for us to get outta the jeeps and explore them afoot. Some other time... The Fish Creek trail then goes up towards the Diablo Drop-off and then to Squeeze Rock, and then meets Pinyon Mountain trail. The part of the trail from Squeeze Rock all the way down to the Fish Creek bed is one-way road, and we weren't heading in the right direction. The map, books, and tales assured us that there was a trail leading towards Carrizo Badlands and eventually - Hwy.S2. The only road we found scared me off (I didn't think long before attempting the pass to Coyote Canyon!) with one to two-foot sized jagged rocks, blackened by tire marks. I judged my (then) dinky 31" tires not providing enough clearance, and we had to retrace our tracks back to Split Mountain. Go back |
